From a factory visit to a stunning self‑built pavilion – a story of craftsmanship and traditional materials.
We receive many international inquiries, but the project from a Romanian couple stood out from the start.
In 2024, they planned to build a traditional Chinese‑style pavilion in their home garden – not for business, but out of genuine love for classical Chinese architecture. They found Dannuo Gardens online, learned we manufacture authentic grey clay tiles, and reached out.
After initial emails, the couple visited our office while travelling in China. They came with clear goals: inspect the tile quality, discuss specifications, and confirm quantities face‑to‑face.
They carefully examined our grey clay tiles – touching surfaces, checking cross‑sections, and asking detailed questions about production and tolerances. Their thoroughness impressed us. They placed an order for the pavilion roof.
They also selected one of our "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" sculptures. But instead of mounting it on the roof, they decided to place it as a standalone garden ornament – a personal touch that we found thoughtful.
Our role was only to supply the tiles and the dragon sculpture. The entire timber structure – pillars, beams, brackets, and roof frame – was researched, designed, and built by Cristian himself.
He is an experienced carpenter with years of woodworking skill. Yet building a Chinese‑style pavilion frame is no ordinary task for a European craftsman. The dougong brackets, beam connections, and roof pitch are completely different from Western systems.
Cristian did not buy a prefabricated structure. He studied drawings, experimented, and completed the whole wooden framework on his own. Our team truly admires his dedication and skill.
When Cristian sent us the completion photos, we were amazed.
The pavilion sits in his garden, with a gracefully upturned roof covered in our grey clay tiles. The colour and texture – a deep, stable grey from our traditional reduction firing – looked perfect in natural light.
The dragon sculpture was placed in a prominent spot, becoming a visual anchor for the whole courtyard. It sits as an art piece, not just a roof decoration, creating a cohesive Chinese atmosphere that respects tradition while adding a personal touch.
This was not our largest order, but it is one of the most rewarding.
It proves two things:
We thank Cristian and his wife for choosing Dannuo Gardens. We are honoured to be part of their garden, and delighted to see traditional Chinese architecture thriving in a Romanian home.
